Requirements For Good Law Enforcement Field Notes

Field notes play a vital role in the enforcement of law. They are important because they form the basis of further investigations. The information in the field notes can be used by a policeman to lead an investigation. Law enforcement officers can create comprehensive reports with vital information using good fieldnotes. Field notes are useful for a policeman who is asked to testify at a legal court. They can refresh their memories of the incident. During trial, police officers can use the field notes they have taken as evidence.

If you take field notes on a person, make sure to include their personal information. Included are their name, contact information and address. In the notes, you should include a description of the person’s appearance. To differentiate between different crimes, it is important to include a brief description of each crime. All of these details are important, as they help the officer write reports by remembering what the individual being interviewed said. It is important that the officer who writes down notes uses abbreviations which are easily identifiable. It is important to note the time and place of the incident. Officers should direct quote witnesses to the statements they make. Include sketches in your fieldnotes. Sketches help identify suspects or weapons used to commit crimes.

Personal opinions regarding the suspect should never be included in good field notes. Notes also shouldn’t include conclusions about an incident. Writing the note should only include relevant information. It is important that you do not write down any information not relevant to your case.

Staged Crime Scene

Investigators should be able tell if a scene is staged when they are called to investigate a crime. Some suspects will commit a crime and then stage it so that the victim looks like she committed it herself. Police officer set up a scene so that it appeared as if his own wife shot herself accidentally while cleaning the pistol. The policeman claimed he was cleaning the pistol when he left and returned to find his wife dead. He also found the gun near her body. The officer stated that the pistol wasn’t loaded. However, rounds and live ammunition were found inside the magazine.

The gun and the cleaning materials were found near the body of the victim in an effort to deceive the investigators. The magazine was also cleaned with Break-Free, and there was a can that contained the solvent. The cleaning solvent residues were also found in the pistol. On the aerosol cleaning solvent can, there was a blood transfer stain similar in DNA to that of victim. This was all done in order to prove that she shot herself accidentally while cleaning her gun.

However, the suspect was unable to fool the investigators by making them believe that the woman had shot herself. The results of a test proved that Break-Free was used to clean the gun after it was discharged. The solvent would still be on her clothing and hands if the woman accidentally shot themselves. The suspect thought placing the gun next to the victim’s corpse and the cleaning supplies would fool the investigators.

The criminal trial of O.J. Simpson for the murder of two people.

O.J Simpson has been accused of the murders his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson as well as her friend Ronald Goldman in 1995. The jury acquitted him. A glove was among the evidence used to locate Simpson. The glove didn’t fit well when it was asked to be worn during the trial. The defense used this to claim that the glove was planted, as it didn’t quite fit.

The defense also argued that DNA evidence was not reliable. The blood on Simpson’s socks, car and gate was a reference to this. The defense claimed that the evidence was not handled properly and therefore could not be relied upon. The DNA evidence that was presented by Simpson’s prosecution proved his presence at the crime scene. However, the results of this evidence were not trustworthy because the police had handled it improperly.

Since the O.J. Simpson homicide, crime laboratories have improved their methods of collecting samples at crime scenes and in DNA processing. The process of collecting samples is done with great care to avoid contamination. By using disposable, sterile tools to collect and store samples, you can avoid contamination. In modern crime laboratories, a very small amount of DNA is required. This was not the case during the Simpson trial. Polymerase Chain Reactions, or PCRs, can create enough DNA to be tested from a tiny sample.

Modern crime labs use short tandem repeated (STR) markers for DNA identification. DNA databases, sample matching and DNA databases are used in the laboratories for identification.
